Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Williamsburg

On my recent, rather super holiday, I stayed with my friend Kristin in Brooklyn, NYC. Much as I love Manhattan, I’ve been lucky enough to see it many times and so it was ace to spend more of my time in Brooklyn on this trip. I’ve visited Kristin here before and loved it, this time I wanted to explore even more. So, with my camera in hand, I decided to explore the neighbourhood of Williamsburg on my way to meet another friend of mine, Simon, who is based in this cool spot. I’m a bit of an observer in life and I rather enjoy walking around looking at people and places; anywhere in America is great for this. I walked around some residential streets, it was a glorious sunny day and the dappled sunlight was hitting the clapperboard houses and the sun faded flags, America and patriotism go hand in hand from my experience. I love the irony of ripped faded stars and stripes proudly hanging next to the tatty doorways and rubbish bins. Walking around Williamsburg, it almost felt like a small mid- American town, cute houses with personalized and kitschly decorated front gardens, quaint dated hair salons and bars, and the odd friendly local eager for a chatter. The fact that this cool, independent area, with a ripe character of its own is a mere moment away from the craziest city on Earth is a wonderful contrast, I really love it.Williamsburg

Instagramming NYC & Miami

Sometimes good things come out of bad things. Losing my dearest Grandfather earlier this year was a heart break. But, he left me enough money to take myself off on a much needed, probably well deserved and long awaited holiday; thank you Gramps. So in honour of his memory, I headed off to one of my most favourite cities in the World, NYC and had an absolute whirl! Having our shop means that James and I rarely get away together, a real pain, but, I have a bunch of friends stateside, most particularly my favourite, Kristin, and so I went to visit friends and get away from it all for a couple of weeks. Yay. One of the best holidays ever.

Kristin lives in Brooklyn, I adore it there, so different from the choas of Manhattan, I also love it there but I spent the bulk of my time exploring Brooklyn. Kristin had a work trip to Miami while I was there (it cleverly overlapped with my visit) so I got to be an extremely lucky girl and tag along on her business class trip there for a few days….pheweeeee, I have never seen such luxury, or heat, amazing.

Then a couple more days in NYC before heading home. A superb time, good friends, amazing weather, fun adventures and lots of head space from real life. I took heaps of photos so there is a whole bunch of blog posts on their way, but for now, if you don’t follow me on Instagram (why ever not it’s so much fun there) then here are a few highlights of my beautiful holiday. x

Graduate Fashion Week

Lucky me, I received a press pass for Graduate Fashion Week; the most perfect excuse to head down to Earl’s Court and spend some time checking out the strongest new fashion talent in the land. London in the sunshine and heaps of fashion; happy girl indeed. Graduate Fashion Week is the perfect platform to showcase the work of over 1,000 graduates from the best UK and international Universities. It offers up the future of fashion with its large exhibition, catwalk shows and acclaimed Gala Award Show. Having been the launch pad for many of our best current day designers such as Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon and Matthew Williamson, it sure is an important place to visit.

I swooned over many beautiful designs and portfolios, and chatted to some very lovely keen beans, freshly starting out on their careers. A few people and their work stood out as my favourites. Firstly, Gemma Harvey, who has just finished her Fashion Marketing Degree at Northumbria University. In her final year, Gemma took on the project of developing her own brand which she calls ‘Hotel Des Fleurs’, a concept store in Paris, based on her love of France and flowers. She designed clothing, branding and marketing material and I was smitten with the colours and the exaggerated abundance of florals. I like things to be either simplistic or overdone and so this overly frothy and super detailed branding was adorable. The colours of pinks and greens were delicious and the clothing was cute as can be. The fabrics she designed; a silky soft lawn cotton with hand painted prints and hand sewn embroidery were incredible, and her passion was totally charming, heck, even her business cards were in the form of a packet of seeds…oh and all the fabric was scented too….I loved it!

Another girl whose work made my eyes pop was Vanina Yankova, who has just finished studying Fashion Knitwear Design at Nottingham Trent University. Her portfolio of sketches, work and ideas was stunning, the colours, textures and silhouettes were beautiful. Definitely a girl with a whole lot of talent, this girl will be a big success. Vanina Yankora

An Accessories Designer called Jessica Chapman was another girl whose work I loved. Graduating from De Montfort University, she bases her designs on architectural influences and the heavy wood is used perfectly, all her pieces have a great strength and certainty. The big bracelet comes apart and clamps around the wrist with hidden magnets, amaaazing!

The final thing that stood out for me was the selection of designers from Instituto Marangoni, an international fashion school in London. Everything shown from this school was executed to a professional perfection, genuinely stunning. The work of A Young Ji was beautiful, intricate beading and luxury detail, totally wearable too.

10 Places That I Really, Really Love (…or would love to be)

We all have favourite places, places we’ve been to and loved and places we wish we go to. Here are 10 of my most favourite places in this crazy World.

1. Jayne Mansfield’s home in the 1950’s. I adore the kitsch and pink-ness of this place, I obviously have never been there, it got bulldozed a few years ago..!!!…but, it pretty much epitomizes my dream house, the heart shaped pool is dreamy and the pink fluffy bathroom is a place that dreams are made of.

 2. The Savoy hotel in the 1930’s. I bloomin’ LOVE hotels, I love the fantasy and the lux of them and they don’t get much cooler than this. I’d like to zip back to the 1930’s and see its splendour.

 3. Central Park, New York. I’m a city girl and NYC is a place that makes my heart beat like a drum, I am in love with that city, and I love the fact that in the fastest city in the world you can place yourself in a big open tranquil park in the middle, perfection.

4. Skorpios Island. On a holiday with James, to Greece, we took a boat around the islands and both fell in love with this place. Known as the island that Aristotle Onassis and Jackie O married and lived on, it is like a private paradise trapped in the 1960’s. As idyllic as it gets.

5. A kitsch motel in Vegas in the 1950’s. I love Vegas, I love it’s glare and sparkle, but the Las Vegas I love is the old one, transport me to a vintage motel and I’d be a happy girl.

 6. London in the rain. My heart belongs to London, and I especially love it on a rainy day, so British and handsome, there is great atmosphere in a soggy city.

 7. Graceland, Memphis. This is another place that has become trapped in a different era, I’ve been twice and as soon as you step foot in there, away from the tourist trash, you are in a different time. I love the decor, the extravagance and the history, and of course the super cool basement room. Spellbinding.

 8. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco. One of my favourite US cities, this bridge has great memories for me, on a very lovely long holiday when I was 16, my family all sat in this exact viewpoint location and spent hours taking in the enormity of this place. Stunning. I love this city, great bohemian vibe and Lombard Street is the coolest street in the land.GoldenGateBridgeSF

 9. Patisserie Florentin, Edinburgh. Edinburgh is pretty damn special to me. With a big part of my family living there, it’s a city I hold dear. Great size, great buildings and a great coffee and cake shop too that I could hang with loved ones in for hours

edinburgh10. At my home with my boys. I love cities and I get itchy feet for travelling, which I have been lucky enough to do all my life, but, hand on heart, sitting at home in my own place with my cats is as good as life gets. This is what I love the most.

Prada Dresses Daisy; The Great Gatsby Costumes

‘Cant repeat the past?…..Why, of course you can.’  The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald

Great Gatsby

Whoopie-dooo! I am so excited to see Baz Lurhman’s The Great Gatsby, and the release date is very nearly here! I adore the F Scott Fitzgerald book, it is quite possibly my favourite book ever, and Lurhman is one of the most sumptuously beautiful directors of our time, so I am pretty damn certain the wait shall be worth it.

For many of Lurhman’s films, including Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge, the costume designer was the supremely talented Catherine Martin. For this film, set in New York in the 1920’s, Martin has teamed up with the legendary Miuccia Prada. Super; we are in for a treat. Transforming over 40 dresses from the archive collections of Miu Miu and Prada, Miuccia says she was fascinated by how little adaptation many of them needed, even though none had originally been designed with the 20’s era in mind. These costumes are about character and the story of those characters lives, rather than blatant glamour.

With this yellow sequin dress from a past Prada collection, we can see how easily suited the original design was for this film, the perfect choice of costume collaborator.

The centre piece dress in the film is Daisy Buchanan’s party dress, which is a gently revised version of Prada’s Chandelier dress from their 2010 collection, as seen here on Miss Moss. The dress was originally designed around the idea of light, but in this film it is about wealth; Lurhman wanted Daisy to be the ‘most beautiful and rich woman in the world’.
